What is LTL shipping?

LTL (Less Than Truckload) is a shipping method for freight that doesn't require a full truck. Your shipment shares truck space with other customers' freight, making it more cost-effective for shipments that are too large for parcel but don't fill an entire truck.

What is the minimum shipment size for LTL freight with Octojan?

There is no minimum pallet count. We accept single-skid shipments as well as multi-pallet loads. LTL freight is priced based on weight, dimensions, and distance — not on how many skids you're shipping.

What's the difference between courier and LTL freight service?

Courier service handles packages under approximately 150 lbs and is priced by weight and zone. LTL freight handles palletized or larger commercial shipments — typically 150 lbs and up — and is priced by freight class and lane. If you're unsure which applies, our quote form will route you to the right service automatically.

How is LTL freight priced?

LTL pricing is based on the origin and destination zone, total shipment weight, freight class (determined by density), fuel surcharge, and any accessorial services selected such as tailgate, residential delivery, or inside delivery. All costs are shown in your quote before you confirm.

What's the difference between LTL and Parcel shipping?

LTL is for larger, palletized freight typically over 150 lbs, shipped on skids or crates. Parcel is for smaller packages under 150 lbs that can be easily handled. LTL uses freight classification and density-based pricing, while Parcel uses simpler weight and dimensional pricing.

Can I ship hazardous materials (hazmat)?

Yes, we can ship hazardous materials that are properly classified, labeled, and packaged according to TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) regulations. You'll need to provide UN numbers, proper shipping names, hazard class, packing group, and 24-hour emergency contact information.

How is shipping cost calculated?

LTL pricing is based on distance, weight, dimensions, freight class, and fuel surcharge. Parcel pricing uses weight tiers and dimensional weight. Additional services like tailgate delivery, residential pickup/delivery, and rush delivery have separate fees.

What is freight class and how does it affect pricing?

Freight class (50-500) is determined by your shipment's density (weight per cubic foot). Higher density items get lower classes (cheaper rates), while lower density items get higher classes (higher rates). Our system calculates this automatically based on your shipment dimensions and weight.

What is the fuel surcharge?

The fuel surcharge is a percentage added to the base rate to account for fluctuating fuel costs. It's updated weekly based on national fuel price indices. Currently, our fuel surcharge is around 15-18%.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Interac e-Transfer, and EFT/bank transfer. Qualified customers can apply for NET 30 credit terms through our credit application process.

Can I get credit terms (NET 30)?

Yes! Customers can apply for credit terms through our online credit application. We require business information, trade references, and bank references. Once approved, you can ship now and pay later with NET 30 payment terms.

What areas do you service?

We primarily service Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with coverage extending to Buffalo, NY and surrounding regions. For shipments outside our primary service area, please contact us for a custom quote.

What cities and towns do you deliver to in the Niagara Region?

We deliver throughout the Niagara Region including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Thorold, Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Grimsby, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lincoln, Pelham, Wainfleet, and West Lincoln. Same-day service is available for eligible orders placed before 12 PM.

Do you deliver outside the Niagara Region?

Yes. We serve Hamilton, Burlington, Toronto, and the GTA, as well as broader Southern Ontario routes. Shipments outside our primary zone may be handled through carrier partners with transit times of 2–5 business days.

How long does delivery take?

Standard LTL delivery is 2-5 business days within Ontario. Parcel delivery is 1-3 business days. We also offer Same Day (8 hours), Next Day, and 2-Day rush delivery options for time-sensitive shipments.

Do you offer same-day delivery?

Yes! Same-day delivery is available for eligible shipments within our service radius (typically within 1.75 hours drive time from our Niagara warehouse). Premium rates apply for rush delivery.

Can you deliver to residential addresses?

Yes, we deliver to both commercial and residential addresses. Residential delivery may incur an additional fee due to the extra time and access challenges associated with residential deliveries.

What if I'm not available to receive my delivery?

Our drivers will attempt delivery and contact you via phone. If you're not available, we can reschedule delivery, leave shipment at a secure location (if authorized), or hold at our warehouse for pickup.

How do I track my shipment?

You can track your shipment using your tracking number on our tracking page. You'll receive real-time updates including pickup confirmation, in-transit status, driver location, and delivery confirmation.

Yes! You'll receive email notifications for key milestones: quote confirmation, pickup scheduled, pickup completed, out for delivery, and delivery confirmation. You can also track live updates in your dashboard.

What is a Bill of Lading (BOL)?

A Bill of Lading is the official shipping document that serves as a receipt and contract. It lists the shipper, receiver, items being shipped, and shipping instructions. You can generate and print your BOL directly from our platform.

What documents do I need to provide?

For most shipments, the Bill of Lading is sufficient. For hazmat shipments, you'll need additional documentation (MSDS, emergency response information). For international shipments, you'll need customs forms and commercial invoices.

What happens if my shipment is damaged or lost?

All shipments include basic liability coverage. File a claim within 9 months of delivery. We'll investigate and process claims according to standard carrier liability terms. Additional insurance is available for high-value shipments.

What warehousing services does Octojan offer?

We offer pallet storage, cross-docking, and container destuffing at our Niagara-area facility. Storage is billed per pallet per day with handling-in and handling-out fees. Temperature-controlled storage is available for eligible products.

Can Octojan deliver directly to Amazon fulfillment centres in Ontario?

Yes. We deliver to major Ontario Amazon fulfillment centres including YYZ4 (Brampton), YYZ7 (Bolton), YHM2 (Hamilton), YYZ1 (Mississauga), YYZ3 (Caledon), and YOW1 (Ottawa). We coordinate delivery appointments in accordance with Amazon's inbound requirements.

Do you handle Amazon's delivery appointment requirements?

Yes. We coordinate directly with Amazon's carrier appointment scheduling system and ensure shipments comply with FBA inbound guidelines including pallet labeling, stretch wrap requirements, and delivery window adherence.

What if my freight is over 96 inches long?

Freight over 96 inches (8 feet) in any dimension incurs an overlength surcharge ($75). If your freight exceeds 95 inches in height, it may require a specialized barn door truck with additional fees.

Do you offer liftgate service?

Yes! Liftgate service (tailgate) is available for both pickup and delivery if you don't have a loading dock or forklift. There's an additional fee per service (pickup and/or delivery).

Can you provide inside pickup or delivery?

Yes, we offer inside pickup and inside delivery services for an additional fee. This includes bringing freight inside the building beyond the threshold. Standard service is curbside or dock-to-dock.

What items cannot be shipped?

We cannot ship: live animals, perishable food without refrigeration, illegal substances, highly flammable or explosive materials (unless properly classified as hazmat), firearms, or items that violate carrier regulations.

Do you offer temperature-controlled shipping?

Yes, we offer temperature-controlled storage and shipping for perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, or temperature-sensitive products. Premium rates apply and availability may be limited.

Do I need an account to get a quote?

No, you can get an instant quote without creating an account. However, creating a free account lets you save quotes, track shipments, manage invoices, and access your shipping history.

How do I create an account?
